, it appears they have pictures of their suspect. our justice correspondent pete williams has been following the investigation all day. he's in our d.c. newsroom tonight. pete, good evening. >> reporter: brian, good evening. the fbi is pursuing very promising leads. one in particular tonight thanks to the abundance of pictures and videos rounded up in the two days since the bombing. we are getting a close-up look at how the bombs were made. >> guys, guys, guys. no way. >> reporter: the fbi says it is getting exactly what it asked for. pictures from several sources showing someone carrying a heavy backpack or duffel bag and placing it at the spot where one bomb went off. one of the most promising images, they say, comes from a department store surveillance camera high up on a building, able to look down at the crowd. on a day when incorrect news reports of an arrest distracted officials, investigators were working aggressively to discover, find, and interview that person. that's at the scene of the second bombing following the first by about 15 seconds. it's that second spot shown on this pic
if things go well, they could -- in the come days. >> pete williams, is there any problems respect as far as you know to whether this is domestic or foreign. >> not yet. they still haven't identified who did it. many of the materials in the bomb were made in china, but lots of things are made in china, widely available here then the other is looks at these pictures. they have identified several things that stand out to them. but that would be a process of elimination. >> there have been questions to why we talk about the devices. the fbi is putting pictures out, because they want us to let people know what has been used. >> but just to be clear, these pictures were actually not released by the fbi or the government. we've gotten or hands on them, because they were either in intelligence bulletins, or i've never seen this many pictures this early in an investigation. i think the fbi shared them with some of their intelligence partners overseas who leaked them to an overseas news agency who put the pictures out there. but all these pictures, very surprising. >> it is surprising. thanks for
justice correspondent pete williams has the very latest. >> reporter: investigators have begun the process of recovering tiny pieces of the bombs to learn how they were made. they say it appears the devices were assembled inside pressure cooker pots similar to this one, packed with bbs, ball bearings and nails. pressure cookers have been used for decades in terror bombings. instructions for making them appear on the internet, including just last month in an al qaeda magazine "inspire." investigators say the explosion in boston was smokeless powder, gunpowder like this available at sporting goods stores, not something more powerful like dynamite. and they believed they were carried in the scene in dark nylon bags and set off by timers. the area was checked twice for bombs but there was no security screening. >> because there is unrestricted access to the racecourse, simply because it's 28 miles long, people can come and go and bring items in and out. >> reporter: authorities searched the apartment of a foreign student injured in the blast and seen run ago way but they found nothing and he i
. and for the very latest on the investigation, we're joined now by nbc news justice correspondent pete williams from washington. so, pete, the very latest on the pressure cooker scenario that you're hearing? >> right. as you say, used for decades in terms of building bombs, so that's not going to be an area of inquiry that will immediately lead them in a certain direction, because the instructions, unfortunately, for making these devices are all over internet. just last month, the al qaeda online magazine "inspire" repeated an article that showed how to build pressure cooker bombs. so they've been out there for a long time. the part, the components of this device appear not to be very fancy. in addition to that, there were shrapnel, ball bearings, bbs, from the sound of the doctors you heard at the beginning of your program, apparently nails as well. and then for the explosive basically gun powder, smokeless powder that's commonly available in sporting goods stores. so all these pieces are easily available. some kind of timer as well. then placed in black sacks and put in two different spots. so wha
public. let's get to the latest with pete williams. i want to start with the two photos, the before and after of a bag next to a mailbox. how important are investigators thinking these could be? >> to be determined, i think. they are looking at this picture and similar pictures to see if that's how the bombs were placed. they're sort of contradictory photo evidence here about whether that's where they went because the after doesn't seem to show a lot of damage, but it's quite clear that the bombs themselves were not busted up into little tiny pieces and the pictures we're seeing show some large pictures of the cook er themselves. let me show you right here, you can see the brand name. inok. of one of the pressure cookers and on the pictures that show the batteries, this is a chinese made battery and these are also wires that were made in china. now, that kind of lead is very important because what they'll do now is to figure out who sells these pressure cooker, where would they have been bought. were they sold in the boston area? what about the wire? are there commonalities? where w
that pete williams from nbc news was insistent all the way through, that his law enforcement sources, which, of course, are impeccable were saying that there was not a suspect in custody. what was going on yesterday and what continues to go on today is that authorities have pored through the video and pictures have been coming in over the last three days trying to pinpoint exactly where those two packages were placed before they went off. now, authorities do acknowledge to nbc news that they have identified by sight a person who is seen placing either a backpack or a duffel bag on to the ground in the place where the second bomb went off in the moments leading up to that explosion. however, according to nbc news, that person has not been identified by name. they just see him on the tape and are working to identify him. he certainly has not been arrested or put into custody. police continue their work today to try to figure out exactly who that person is. last night, the fbi was planning to have one of their twice daily media briefings around 8:00 local time. that was canceled. and so we're
. >> bringing in pete williams into the discussion. i want to start with the images, the first one lester showed u. us, the immediate aftermath, from across the street, looking down. you will see a man in black, his clothing has been shredded, running from the scene. are investigators looking at that? this is not the one okay, here is the one we are talking about. our invest gators looking at him running to or away from terror? >> i would say running away. with a window over the finish line, we saw this man. can you see the impact of the blast partially ripped his clothes away. now, the same thing was said about this exchange student. we are not sure -- it could be the exchange student, they are not sure. if any event, the fbi no longer considers him, they think he was just a victim. >> and the mail box, there is a package, a bag at the foot of that mail box, we zoom in on that one. and the immediately aftermath of the explosion. it looks like it took place almost exactly in that spot. what you are hearing from invest gators from this? >> they have other pictures that show the same thing. the q
williams who is live in washington. pete, what are you hearing about the investigation to the bombings in boston? >> right. it's all about putting pieces of puzzles together. first of all, the devices themselves are here in the suburban washington in the fbi's crime lab where they will try to reinstruct them. they believe they were carried to the scene in black nylon duffel bags and say that because of the weight that each device probably weighed 20 pounds filled with gun powder and shrapnel and in pressure cookers. you can see the brand name of the pressure cookers in a couple of the pictures that we have obtained. the second part of it is the pictures themselves that they are asking people to send in and they are getting a huge amount, so far, three terra bytes of data that is thousands of hours of video and still pictures. they want more. this is from our affiliate in boston. it shows in the first picture what appears to be a trash bag next to the green thing is a trash container and looking at whether the bombs might have been place inside trash bags to look less conspicuous and a
